And the temps only got up in the 40s today. Cool biking. This morning was challenging mentally and physically. Low temps, 15-20 mph North winds, rough roads, no shoulders, heavy traffic, hills. One little dog met its maker chasing me in traffic. Got the morning off to a bad start. I guess it was worse for the dog. But, this afternoon brought me through the Sam Houston National Forest. Still cool temps but nice roads, low traffic, very pretty.
I made 83 miles today to Navasota. I'm camping at a municipal RV park. Didn't know there was such a thing. And apparently noone else did either. No charge for tenters, but you have to duck every time a plane comes in at the airport.

Carl,
ReplyDeleteHow many hours are you actually pedaling on these 80+ mile days? How are the knees and hips and such holding up? You must have to eat like a horse just to keep enough calories going in. Sorry to hear about the dog. That's a tough way to start the day.
Depending on the terrain, 80 miles is about 8 or 9 hours of cycling. Today's 70 miles took me 8 1/2 hrs, but I'm in the hill country now (though I was told tonight that I'm not officially in the hill country until I'm west of Austin). Sure seem like hills to me. When I put a couple of hard days back to back, the knees talk it up a little. But something keeps happening to have me lay over a day and recoup. Tomorrow looks like steady rain and temps in the 40s. Seems like a great day to veg at the Oak Motel in. LaGrange, where I am tonight.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I'm eating more like a cow than a horse. Managing to hold my weight. Still got a tummy. Don't know what I would have to do to get rid of that, but I'm damned unlikely to do it!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I seem to remember that the Texas Hill Country officially starts west of the Continental divide, which cuts more or less through Austin. Not sure if it's pertinent this time of year, but there is a well known bridge in Austin where many thousands of bats depart daily from the bridge down the river almost single file at dusk. It's a sight worth hanging around for. Wish I could remember the name of the bridge, but I knew it as the "Bat Bridge". Might not be active this time of year anyway.
