Young longleaf pine, the fire-resistant southern economic engine

  1. What do you mean? I get that it is fire resistant....but why the economic engine? Do we use it for building?????

    Longleaf pine is the legal 'cash crop' in the southeast. It is one of the favorite species of the timber industry, in part because they have engineered a strain that will mature and be ready to harvest in roughly 25 years. That's fast as timber goes, and the industrial forests are huge down here. It's big business in the rural deep south.

    I also think young longleaf pine are really pretty in this 'grass stage' where the needles are so long that they cover and protect the terminal bud from fire. Later, as the trees mature the bark is fire resistant. I can't remember if longleaf cones are serotinous (need fire to open and release the seeds). I'll have to check on that one. That's everything I remember from dendrology class.
